Tianjin University is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education. It was originally called Beiyang University. Founded on October 2, 1895, it is the first modern university in China recognised in the world for its motto "Seeking truth in facts", its spirit of "Being rigorous in research" and its tradition of "Patriotic devotion".
It was renamed by the state in 1951 as Tianjin University and later qualified as one of the first 16 key national universities approved by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in 1959. It is one of the first important universities in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" and is among the Class A institutions of the national "World-class University Construction" project.
